The double helix structure of dna can break and go through chemical modification of bases. Living cells often prevent these damages, however over the years, degradation of dna can cause serious damage. Colder temperatures help to conserve dna more efficiently. Deoxyribonucleic acid the large, double-stranded, helical molecule that contains the genetic material of all living organisms. The only thing that was known was that a chemical substance is responsible for carrying instructions for reproducing traits in offspring generations. In 1952, it was discovered that dna was the hereditary molecule. After this was discovered, people tried to figure out the structure of dna. Rosalind and franklin discovered a model for the dna that we know today. It enabled scientists to truly understand how dna functions. 12. 1 - establishing dna as the hereditary molecule.
