Australian sheep blowflies will damage the wool of sheep and cost the industry millions of dollars. An insecticide is used to kill the maggots and the adult flies. However, some have a mutation that makes them resistant to organophosphate insecticides and they survive to reproduce, despite being sprayed. Due to the flies" short life cycle and high reproductive rates, there a rapid spread of the mutation in the fly population. Shows the combination of a genetic based change (a small mutation) and a strong selective pressure (lethal organophosphate insecticide) Human interference can result in evolution by natural selection. Evolution is the main unifying concept in biology, explaining how the diversity of life on earth arose and how species change over time in response to changes in their biotic and abiotic environment. Biological evolution refers to gradual change of populations or organisms over time, measuring time in generations rather than years.
