Document Summary

Basic mechanism of propagation of action potentials in neurons. Neurons are polarized by pumping positive ions out. Nerve transduction is the movement of the ions -> depolarization of the membrane. How channelrhodopsin can control action potentials in neurons. Channel rhodopsin is expressed in the neurons of the brain of the rat. If you shine blue light on that neuron -> channel opens -> positive ions rush in -> membrane depolarizes -> changes rats behavior. Possible sources of genes (ie. channelrhodopsin) for use in making transgenic organisms. Role of restriction endonuclease enzymes in creating recombinant dna. Take chlamy genome and cut it into pieces with restriction endonucleases. Enzyme recognize specific dna sequences and makes cuts. Double stranded cuts at very specific cuts in dna. Add piece of chlamy dna into another dna to create recombinant dna molecules. We could harvest mrna from chlamy and then reverse transcribe that into double stranded dna called cdna.
