Document Summary

Use of light energy to convert co2 > carbohydrates. Coverts light energy to chemical energy, in the form of sugars. Photo-autotrophic organisms are earth"s primary producers- main source of organic compounds that are used to sustain other organisms. Heterotrophs = consumers, organisms that live by eating plants or other animals. Decomposers = small organisms that feed on the remains of other dead organisms; a type of heterotroph. Some archaeans harvest light energy, but this energy is not used to make organic compounds, therefore they are not considered to be photosynthetic . We can say that: water is reacting with co2 to produce a 6c glucose product, as oxygen and water are by=products. Amount of co2 consumed = o2 produced, therefore rate of photosynthesis can be measured as the rate of co2 consumed or as the rate of o2 is produced. This equation is a redox reaction- made of 2 half-reactions. Oxidation = loosing electron, water is being oxidized to oxygen.
