Types of elements found in living things can also be found in nonliving things. Both obey the fundamental laws of physics & chem. The 7 characteristics mentioned above result from a complexity interaction b/w atoms. Complexity may include organelles, tissues, & organs for more complex organisms. These 7 properties are called emergent since they emerge from many simple interactions. These simple interactions are unable to be nd at the complex levels (complex things cannot happen w/o the base of these simple interactions) Ex: the ability to use every is not due to macromolecules, or proteins, or membranes; Rather it is due to the interactions between these 3 factors. The functional complexity of living systems is more than just the sum of parts, it is the. The complex properties of life emerge from much simpler molecular interactions.
