For most animals, only mutations in the germ line (aka. the cell lineage that produces gametes) are heritable. In plants, mutations may occur in meristem cells which eventually produce flowers & nonreproductive structures. In such cases, a mutation may be passed to the next generation and ultimately influence the gene pool.
