Biology 2483A Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Larrea Tridentata, Aspen Grove, Apomixis
Document Summary
Topic is important in terms of how we approach our management of other organisms. Population: group of interacting individuals of the same species living in a particular area. There are natural populations that we humans harvest (ie. fisheries). Lots of conservation efforts go towards managing rare animals, close to extinction. Nature of populations is that they can be difficult to understand/describe. (cid:120) Distribution: geographic area where individuals of a species occur. 125/hectare (cid:120) difficulty: sometimes the total area occupied by a population is not known: it is often difficult to know how far organisms or their gametes can travel. (cid:131) ex. Bee"s, or pollen in the wind: when the area isn"t fully known, an area defined based on best available knowledge of the species. (cid:131) ex. Knowledge on how far the species usually migrates. Not much synchronized population fluctuation, also you see quite large differences over space.
