Order: materials in living organisms always exhibit some type of order. For example, molecules in living cells are not scattered randomly about but instead are arranged in patterns that make cell structures. Growth and development: living organisms grow and develop directed by genetics. Energy utilization: living organisms use energy to create order, reproduce, and grow. Without an input of energy, systems tend towards disorder (second law of thermodynamics) Species are a group of organisms that have common characteristics (and can interbreed). They are genetically distinct: genus (generic) species (specific): homo. Anaximander said life arose in water and evolved into more complex forms. Aristotle said species are fixed and independent and do not evolve or go extinct. Lamarck suggested that fossils were related by evolution.
