The bagobo are a minority ethnic group in southern mindanao, the philippines. They think about their traditional cloth and clothing as polysemic symbols of group identity and personhood. They call their ceremonial dress omp k (clothing) when discussing it amongst themselves and k styom (costume) when talking to non-bagobo. Kostyom links them to region and nation-state while ompak although meaning same thing refers to one"s existence as a bagobo and as a person. They control the way they are presented as spectacle. The term bagobo in some regions encompasses three groups: tagabawa, guiangan and obo. All of them where the same type of traditional clothing. The three don"t share the same language though. The tagabawa and obo speak related languages but geographically are separated by the guiangan.
