Chapter 5: communities of language users: many ling. Anthros agree that a group of people who are set apart socially will probably be set apart linguistically as well and vice versa. Its focus on the groups at the expense of individuals. Its view of identity as a set of static categories. Its valorization of researchers" interpretations over participants" own understandings of their practices. Individuals might be part of numerous speech networks simultaneously and/or sequentially over their life and these networks may or may not overlap or be nested within one another in some way. Individuals ties with others in these networks vary: strong or weak ties in networks with strong ties, individuals have personal relationships possibly involving kinship or close friendship. In a uniplex structure, individuals are connexted in one way: high density or low density in high density networks, many of the people any one person knows will also know one another.
