When rst studying human patterns we assumed that people did things rstly based on subsistence. They were skeptical of cognitive archaeology - the study of all those aspects of the ancient culture that is the product of the human mind. Also thought they were epiphenomena - features of human societies that were derivative from more important technological and economic basis and thus not important for understanding the past. Many felt that this heavy materialism dehumanizes the past. Argued for an archaeology of the mind . This is a post-processual approach because trying to infer meaning. But this chapter arguing that meaning can be scienti cally tested. Not everything done purely for economic reasons.
