SOC-1101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Macrosociology, Microsociology, Unit
Document Summary
Sociology is an attractive area of study, and many people do study it. Wonder why things happen the way they do. Eg. poor dressed children are treated differently than well dressed children. Eg. parents sometimes treat their sons differently from their daughters. Goal for sociologists is to be able to explain social life, critique social inequities, and work toward effecting social change. In most social life there is a visible tug-of-war between two forces: the group and the individual. Impossible for a sociologist to study all social issues, therefore they specialize in either macrosociology or microsociology. Macrosociology is the study of large social organizations (eg. the roman catholic church, universities, corporations, or government bureaucracies) and large social categories (eg. ethnic minorities, the elderly, or college students) Macro sociologists focus on the complex social patterns that people form over long periods. Microsociology focuses on the typical processes and patterns of interaction in small groups.
