Document Summary

Marks a time period in ontario where medical and genetic characteristics played a role in recognizing someone as developmentally disabled. However, social expectations played the greatest role in determining how individuals were recognized. The study of developmental disabilities was deemed of little importance. Domineering social traditions were exclusionary at the time. Asylum era: marked by an interest in reform for those with developmental disabilities, which resulted in the creation of asylums. The original intent, and prevailing idea in the 1850"s, was towards helping disabled individuals prepare for life in the outside world. Managers of treatment programs complained that those with developmental disabilities were largely irresponsive to treatment and thus incurable. Mental defectives, as opposed to the mentally ill, were segregated in insane asylums and given little more than custodial care. During the 19th century, highly disabled children, known as idiots, were prepared for life in the community in a highly controlled environment.
