PSYC 2230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Hearing Aid, 18 Months, Depth Perception

69 views4 pages

Document Summary

Nativism: idea that we are born with the ability to perceive. Aslin"s maintenance theory: animals who are deprived of light show deterioration of the entire visual system and a decrease in perceptual abilities; same goes for auditory stimuli and perceptual system. Negative version of aslin"s facilitation effect: babies lacking sufficient stimulation may develop more slowly. At birth, visual acuity tends to be between 20/200 and 20/400 but improves quickly over the first year due to myelination, dendritic development, and pruning. Most infants reach 20/20 vision by 6 months of age. Tracking: the process of following a moving object with your eyes; relatively poor at birth but improves quickly within 6-10 weeks. Colour vision: cells necessary for perceiving red and green (cones) are clearly present by 1 month of age, and perhaps even at birth (blue cones are probably present as well) Babies can hear long before they are born, but hearing also improves greatly in early months.
