DRAM 2100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Ethnocentrism
Document Summary
It is the audience that decides whether or not a speech was successful. There are five general types of audiences: captive (disengaged listener): listeners who attend because someone with authority/power insisted ex. required speech class. Challenge: to get the audience to listen and want to hear what you have to say: committed (agreeable listener): usually agrees with your stance already and is interested in what you have to say ex. Ex. school board meetings, meetings about public utility rates, etc. Challenge: present new ideas in a stimulating and attention grabbing fashion: casual (unexpected listener): when people stop to hear a speaker just out of curiosity or casual interest and stay until they become bored. Challenge: to connect with listeners immediately and create curiosity/interest. An attitude: a learned predisposition to respond favorably or unfavorably toward some attitude object; an evaluation. A belief: what someone thinks is true or probable.
