Genome: the total digital information contained within the dna sequences of an organism"s chromosomes. Genomics: the branch of biology dedicated to the study of whole genomes. First meeting of the hgp took place in santa cruz, california, in the spring of 1985. They thought the project would not be particularly worthwhile because only approximately 2% of the genome codes for proteins the remaining 98% they argued must be junk. The us government funded hgp began in 1990 with a projected 15 year time scale and a 3 billion dollar budget for complete sequence of the hgp. The hgp (cid:396)efe(cid:396)e(cid:374)(cid:272)e se(cid:395)ue(cid:374)(cid:272)e is a (cid:862)(cid:272)o(cid:373)posite(cid:863) of a few individuals. It is important to note that the sequence provided by the hgp was obtained from only a small number of anonymous donors. These advancements have led to a rapid increase in the number of sequencing projects and have resulted in vast amounts of individual, personalized genome data.
