Leads to the development of new ideas and processes. Promotes the benefits of meritocracy (you get what you earn). Social control: teaches obedience, disburses punishment, reinforces proper behaviour. Generally two approaches societies can take when deciding how to educate the next generation. Quality focuses limited recourses into truly gifted students. Equality use resources to teach as many students as possible. Best students go to other places with higher quality for the gifted. Research by (pfeffer) shows that spreading education as wide and as fairly as possible does not decrease educational quality, but rather, increases it.
