58 views4 pages

Document Summary

Motivation: a hypothetical construct to explain the internal &/or external forces that give behaviour initiation, energy, direction, intensity & persistence. Explains the relationship between the cause of & a behaviour. A hypothetical construct is not tangible & we cannot directly observe it, rather we just make the hypothesis that it exits. Different types of motivation exist & includes both approach & avoidance tendencies. Want to study what type & how much. We self-regulate ourselves in an attempt to minimize the discrepancies between our present self & our ideal self: physiological regulation: achieving physiological needs, organismic regulation: achieving psychological needs. Psyc 385 - part i: needs intrinsic motivation: reasons to engage in a behaviour are intrinsic to the activity, & the behaviour itself is the end reward. Arises from within through a psychological need & a striving for growth. Cannot be increased, only supported & maintained. Results in persistence, creativity, conceptual learning, well-being.
