PSYC 345A Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Drug Tolerance, Tachyphylaxis, Reward System
Document Summary
Psyc 345a - chapter 3: tolerance & placebos tolerance: decreased effectiveness (potency) & desensitization to drug effects: feeling of high doesn"t feel as good (illicit, does not alleviate symptoms (medical) Some drug effects may develop tolerance very quickly, some show slow tolerance, & some effects never show tolerance. Selective tolerance: one effect is diminished, while another is not. Cannot develop at all if the drug"s effects are not detected or they don"t cause any disruptive functioning. May disappear over time after the drug has been discontinued: pharmacodynamic (functional) tolerance: changes in the physiological response of the body through the number of receptors/neurotransmitters. 2 different types: (i) protracted tolerance: occurs overtime after several exposures: cellular adaption: reduction in the number of receptors, requires more of the drug in order to obtain the same effect. An increase in the rate or ability of the body to metabolize a drug, resulting in fewer drug molecules reaching their soas.
