Over time, skirts have become crossed with politics and notions of femininity. The skirt can be a symbol and a tool of control at times. Until the cultural revolution started in 1966, there was much freedom of clothing in china and after the country became more regimented, wearing skirts was condemned as bourgeois. The hemline has become almost like a tool of control for men over women. Hemlines have caused an uproar, even the slightest blink of an ankle could condemn a woman and it brands women. As time went on, women were eventually con ned to their skirts and were controlled through this way. In places in indonesia, sarongs are tied in different ways so that it divides men and women as there seems to be an importance of clothing indicating your gender and class throughout history. Religions also dictate what kind of clothing women can wear, such as devout muslim women not being able to wear short skirts.
