Organizing information into a data table makes the context of the data clear. Data tables of things like headings, which assist in interpreting information and organizing it. Newspapers provide a context; the lead paragraph should always establish the 5 w"s (who, what, where, why, when). Often, we also add how to the list. The answers to what attributes or characteristics are measured and who they are measured on are essential without them, the values displayed are meaningless. Rows of a data table correspond to the individual cases, about whom we record some characteristic. The rows represent the who, and the characteristics represent the what. In a database, rows are called records: an amazon. com data table shows the order number, the album a person bought, and the person"s name.
