The study is strongly informed by the life course perspective. We focused on small- and medium-sized it enterprises (smes) on which very little research has been conducted. In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with company executives, hr managers, and employees in various occupational groups. Respondents were asked about their personal histories and experiences with it work, and management were asked their views about the it field in general. A web survey of managers and employees solicited information about demographic characteristics, work history, attitudes about older and younger workers, nonstandard employment practices, and so on.
