Hate crimes distinct from other crimes because they inflict a disproportionate harm: exceeds harm inflicted on individuals; goal to intimidate and/or injure an entire community. Three characteristics that separate hate crimes from other crimes: attack core feature of the victim"s identity, negatively impact entire communities by making other members fear for their safety, injuries and damage inflicted are more severe. Gender identity: gender that a person feels him or herself to be. Gender expression: how we express our gender (masculine, feminine, tomboys, androgynous, etc) Sexual orientation: identification of individuals as heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, etc based on emotional and sexual attractions, relationships, self-identity, and lifestyle. Transgendered individuals: persons who don"t fit into male or female category, or whose behavior isn"t congruent with rules and expectations for their sex in the society in which they live. Lesbigays: collective term sometimes used to refer to lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.
