SOC364H1 Chapter Notes -Psychopathology, Maladaptation, In Essence
Document Summary
In the past, health professionals have focused their research largely on maladaptation and illness and the associated predisposing risk factors of these states. This risk factor focus is partially due to the medical model approach and influence on federal, state, and foundation funding. The purpose of this paper is to present a resiliency model which, for the informed reader, provides insight in two areas. First it will provide a framework for prevention and create the structure for piecemeal studies and articles that currently exist in the prevention literature. Secondly, it expands the scope and challenge of prevention and health education programs. Resiliency defined resiliency as a process of the interaction between individuals and environmental circumstances that promote resiliency in youth. The authors define resiliency from a preventive perspective although the application also has therapeutic implications. This process perspective is contrary to the perspective that resiliency is a state-trait or characteristic within the individual.
