Document Summary
Daily forms of manners" (e. g. covering your mouth when coughing) seem to be natural, however they shouldn"t be taken for granted. They are societal accomplishments that take a long time to perfect and are a part of what we call etiquette". May be considered good manners according to our north american standards, however they are not considered so in other parts of the world (wouldn"t eat with a knife and fork in cambodia) In the chapter we talk a bout how etiquette and other social scripts" that contribute to the culture of a nation are transmitted from one generation to the next through agents of socialization. We are all products of our society (the ways we think and act, our values and the norms we live by are all shaped by society) However, a lot of what and who we are are a result of our own activities. Freedom and determinism/ transformation and constraint are central features of social life.
