Document Summary
Family: for the purpose of this chapter, any social unit, or set of social relations, that does what families are properly imagined to do. Nuclear family: a group consisting of a father and a mother, and their children, living in the same dwelling. Extended family: multiple generations of relatives living together, or several adult siblings with their spouses and children who share a dwelling and resources. Family relations tend to include long-term commitments, both to each other and to the family as a social unit. In reality, many families lack these attachments and commitments, and interdependency is limited. Family members ideally have a deep understanding of, and familiarity with, one another. On the basis, they are also expected to develop feelings of affection and trust. Adult partners in families ideally have, or as expected to have, a long-term, exclusive sexual relationships, while children are expected to not have sexual relationships with one another or with their parents.
