Given a deadline, must systematically search for data that tests the hypothesis, supporting it or challenging you to improve / abandon it. This chapter discusses how to find sources and winnow them to a manageable number. Raw data that you first use to test hypothesis, then as evidence to support claim e. g. documents from time period or person studied, artifacts, maps, clothing (history), text of study (literature / philosophy) Synthesizes and reports on secondary sources for general readers books and articles e. g. textbooks, articles in encyclopedias, mass-circulation publications.
