Chapter 11: conflict summary: with more time spent together, more likely for conflict to occur. Second, there are certain tensions in a relationships that are just waiting to cause strain: opposing motivations are called dialectics. Autonomy and connection to others is an example. The frequency of conflict: many conflicts occur, and many of them are not addressed. Personality: higher in neuroticism leads to more conflicts. Attachment style: anxious tend to think there is more conflict than there actually is. Stage of life: more conflicts when getting to about 25, then decreases after. Instigating events: most conflicts in parents about child management. Criticism: verbal/non-verbal acts that are judged to communicate dissatisfaction with a partner"s behaviour/attitude/trait. Illegitimate demands: involves requests that seem unjust because they exceed the normal expectations that the partners hold for each other. Rebuffs: involves situations in which one person appeals to another for a desired reaction, and the other person fails to respond as expected.
