The other kind of communication is non-propositional (evolutionary older, don"t denote anything, like hormones): emotions are based on non-propositional communications, or emotional signals. Set the system into a particular mode, an emotion mode. Another non-emotional mode is daydreaming: each emotional mode inhibits another. The intensity of the emotion is related to the amount of the system that is focusing on that emotion at a particular time: an emotion mode is necessary but not sufficient for full expression of an emotion. Emotions last a few seconds to a few minutes, while emotional states last longer. That is then a mood: proposed that complex emotions are elaborations on the 5 basic. These actions have been wired into us through evolution: for the 5 basic emotions: hiccups are patched. sadness. Do nothing or search for a new plan.
