PSY290H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Vestibulocochlear Nerve, Sine Wave, Posterior Parietal Cortex
Document Summary
The five exteroceptive sensory systems are the visual system, the auditory system, the somatosensory system, the olfactory system and the gustatory system. Primary sensory cortex is the area of the sensory cortex that receives the most input from the thalamus. Secondary sensory cortex is the area of the sensory cortex that receives most input from the primary sensory cortex or from other areas of the secondary sensory cortex. Association cortex is the area that receives input from more than one sensory system. Depending on how these are organized, there"s three different types of sensory system organization: hierarchical organization. Sensory structures are organized in a hierarchy depending on the complexity of the function. As you go up the hierarchy, neurons start responding to more and more specificity and complexity. Each level receives most of its input from the lower level, adds another level of analysis, and passes it onto the upper layer.
