Our memories aren"t accurate and unchanging like photographs, but they are always changing depending on the event to be remembered, stored knowledge and the things that happen after the event. Meaning what we remember may be changed from what actually happened. Autobiographical memory (am) is memory for specific experiences from life, which can include both semantic and episodic components. There are two other important components to am: multidimensional: they consist of spatial, emotional and sensory components. Greenberg and rubin found that there were patients who lost their ability to recognize or visualize objects had also trouble with their am. Their own photos caused more activation in the prefrontal cortex (bc of processing info about the self) and in the hippocampus (bc of recollection). Their own pictures probably also elicited memories about the process of taking the picture- which shows the richness of am.
