Present p"s with a category title such as bird or furniture and a list of about 50 members of the category. The p"s task was to rate the extent to which each member represented the category title on a 7- point scale (1=very good example, 7=poor fit within the category). Results show that some items are considered better examples of categories than others. Furthermore, they also got p"s to list a bunch of characteristics for a list of words (some of the words were in the same category, some were not). The bigger the overlap in characteristics between two items, the bigger the family resemblance. family resemblance (multiple objects within a category that have many same features) is correlated with prototypicality (the typical member of the category). Get p"s to respond yes or no to a series of statements (ex. An apple is a fruit a pomegranate is a fruit).
