Every experience creates potential for a new memory. New memories are fragile & can be easily disrupted. Consolidation: process that transforms new memories to a permanent state (whereby resistant to disruption) Immediate group: learned 1 list right after another. Delay group: learned 1st list, waited 6 min, then learned 2nd list. Delay group recalled much more (2x) as much as the immediate group: the lack of a delay interfered with proper formation of memory of the 1st list. Synaptic consolidation: structural changes at the synapse. Systems consolidation: gradual reorganization of neural circuits within the brain. They occur at the same time (but at different speeds & in different levels of the nervous system) Donald hebb: neurons that fire together, wire together: repeated activity strengthens the synapse causing structural changes & greater neurotransmitter release, memories are the pattern of neural firing & neural changes.
