Document Summary

Division: distinguishing b/w different types of memory: useful, b/c it divides memory into smaller, easier to study components. Interaction: different types of memory can interact & share mechanisms. Long-term memory: system that stores information for long periods of time: an archive of information about past events & all knowledge. Long time span: more recent memories tend to be more detailed. Details fade w/ accumulation of more experiences. Both: archive of personal memories & events, background information that we"re constantly using to understand our world. Ltm is a storage compartment- cannot manipulate information: has to transfer to working memory. Ltm and wm work closely together: ex. as ww is holding a sentence, ltm is attributing meaning to the words (which are simply sounds, until ltm attributes words, and therefore meaning, to them) Serial position curve: people remember words at the beginning & end of a list better, than words in the middle. Goal: to study distinction b/w stm and ltm.
