Mood disorders: involve disabling disturbances in emotion, from the sadness of depression to the elation and irritability of mania. Depression: emotional state marked by great sadness and feelings of worthlessness and guilt. In children: somatic complaints (headaches or stomach aches) Although recurrent, tends to dissipate with time. When it becomes chronic, people does not completely snap back to an earlier level of functioning between bouts. Dimensional assessments: an anxiety dimension across all mood disorder categories, a suicide assessment dimension, a substance abuse severity dimension, major depression (unipolar depression) Mdd: major depressive disorder: 5/9 for at least two weeks. Prevalence doubles at turning point between late adolescence and adulthood. Depression and mania are more prevalent in western. With substance dependence = higher suicidal thoughts. Sad, depressed mood (most of the day, nearly every day) Melancholic: loss of interest and pleasure: have more frequent episodes, more comorbidity, and more impairment = severe type of depression.
