Document Summary
Abnormal psychology: chapter 2 theoretical perspectives on abnormal behaviour. From the 20th century, there are two main streams of thought concerning mental disorders: one focuses on biological aspects of disorders, the other focuses on environmental influences (the nature/nurture distinction) Levels of theories: single-factor explanation: attempts to trace the origin of a particular disorder to one factor usually reflects the primary focus of the researcher/theorist/clinician. Interactionist explanation: view behaviour as the product of the interaction of a variety of factors. General aim about mental disorders are to explain. Identify the factors that maintain the behaviour: the etiology cause or origins of the problem behaviour/disorder, predict the course of the disorder, design effective treatments. Biological theories have primarily implicated dysfunctions in/damage to the brain (cns), problems of control of one or another aspects of the pns or malfunctioning of the endocrine system: the role of the cns. The brain has ~100 billion neurons (nerve cells) and 1000~ billion glia cell (support cells)
