Paradigm - a set of basic assumptions that outline the particular universe of scientific inquiry (a conceptual framework or approach within the scientist works) Has profound implications for how scientists operate, specify problems they will investigate and how they will go about the investigation. They are intrinsic to science, serving the vital function of indicating the rules to be followed. A paradigm injects inevitable biases into the definition and collection of data - may also affect the interpretation of facts. The meaning or import given to data may depend to a considerable extent on a paradigm. Mental disorders are due to aberrant biological processes - often called the disease model. Studying abnormal behaviour - linked to medicine - medical illnesses can differ widely. In all of them, biological processes are disrupted - not normal. Psychopathology is viewed as caused by the disturbance of some biological process.
