Document Summary

One consequence of being a social animal is that we are constantly in a state of tension between individualistic values and conformist values. Instead of conformist we can say team player. As much as we admire nonconformists in history or in stories, we prefer conformists in our daily lives. Stanley schachter showed this in a social psychology experiment: Groups with 9 participants of male students decide the fate of a teenager arrested for breaking the law. Out of the 9 people, 3 are confederates that play 3 different roles: The modal person: conformed to the average position of the real participants. The deviant person: took a position opposite to the avg of the real participants. The slider person: first like deviant, but then slid into the modal, conforming position. The modal was liked the most, the deviant was liked the least.
