PSY220H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Peer Pressure, Mammography
Document Summary
Sleeper effect a delayed impact of a message occurs when we remember the message but forget a reason for discounting it (so it becomes more persuasive since we forgot it"s from a non- credible source). When someone gives a testimony in a more straightforward way (rather than in a hesitating, stuttering way), the straightforward person is seen more competent and credible and thus more persuasive. Perceived trustworthiness in terms of persuasion: by looking straight into someone"s eye you are perceived as more trustworthy. Another experiment: have someone eavesdrop on a conversation. If the conversation is relevant to the eavesdropper, the speaker had more influence if the listeners presumed the speaker was unaware of the eavesdropping. We also perceive trustworthiness to those who argue against their own self-interest: e: present students with a speech attacking a company"s pollution of a river.
