Document Summary
Module 4. 1 sensation and perception at a glance. Detecting and translating complexity of the world occurs in two stages: First step, sensation: process of detecting external events by sense organs and turning those stimuli into neural signals: ex// someone"s voice is simply noise, until . Perception: attending to, organizing, and interpreting stimuli: ex// recognizing the noise as someone"s voice. Transduction: specialized receptors transform physical energy of outside world into neural impulses. Raw sensations are turned into info through this process. Impulses travel into brain and give rise to our internal representation of the world. Doctrine of specific nerve energies: different senses are separated in the brain. Orienting response: how quickly we shift out attention to stimuli that signal a change in our sensory world. Sensory adaptation: reduction of activity in sensory receptors with repeated exposure to a stimulus. Ex// traffic is less annoying after studying with it around for awhile. Allows us to adjust to our environment!
