Document Summary
Module 3. 2 how the nervous system works: cells & neurotransmitters. Human body composed of many different types of cells. Neurons one of the major types of cells found in the nervous system, that are responsible for sending and receiving messages throughout their body. Billions of cells receive and transmit messages every day, including while you are asleep. Primary purpose to fire , to receive input from one group of neurons and to then transmit that info to other neurons. Allows single neurons to work together as part of networks involving thousands (sometimes millions) of other cells. Eventually leads to some form of behavior. Parts of the cell are specialized for receiving incoming info from other neurons. Other parts are specialized for transmitting info to other neurons. Afferent (sensory) neurons relay messages from sense organs and receptors (i. e. ears, etc. ) to brain, spinal cord. Efferent (motor) neurons convey signals from the brain/spinal cord to glands, muscles = movement.
