Document Summary

Recall that psychodynamic theories involve the unconscious mind; the idea that everything we say or do is as a result of unconscious thoughts and experiences that are hidden deep within the mind (freud"s work) Conscious mind is your current awareness containing everything you are aware of right now. Unconscious mind is a much more vast and powerful but inaccessible part of your consciousness, operating without conscious endorsement or will to influence and guide your behaviours. Think about the analogy of the angel and the devil on your shoulders. In times of anxiety where the ego is unable to resolve that anxiety, the ego employs defence mechanisms unconscious strategies the ego uses to reduce or avoid anxiety. These are usually things that don"t actually protect you (like plugging your ears at the sound of people yelling) and so these defence mechanisms show examples of denial (a type of defence mechanism)
