Document Summary
Science is a philosophy of knowledge that stems from two fundamental beliefs: empiricism and determinism. Empiricism a philosophical idea that knowledge about the world is based strictly on observation and not common sense or speculation. Determinism the belief that all events are governed by lawful, cause-and-effect relationships (ex. an object falls downward when we drop is due to gravity) Psychology involves both empiricism (the scientific method of making observations and testing hypotheses) and determinism (behaviour occurs due to interactions at different levels ranging from interactions between cells to societal influences) Influences from the ancients: philosophical insights into behaviour. In ancient greece, hippocrates developed the world"s first personality classification scheme in which four humours (fluids) flowed throughout the body. Galen expanded on this by suggesting that the four humours combined to create temperaments (personality characteristics) that composed an individual. Sanguine (blood) tendency to be charismatic and pleasure-seeking. Choleric (yellow bile) tendency to be ambitious, energetic, aggressive.
