Document Summary

Module 13. 1- the power of the situation: social influences on behaviour. Abu ghraib- prison that was once used by hussein for torture and cruelty was now used as a base for us soldiers to do the same to iraqi prisoners. Zimbardo states that it is too simplistic to blame the individual perpetrators; you have to also look at the situational forces. To fully understand social reality, psychologists study the interaction between the person and the situation. Kurt lewin: b=f(p,e): behaviour is a function of the person and the environment. Unlike behaviourism it focused on the present. Mimicry: taking on ourselves the behaviours, emotional displays and facial expressions of others (we act like others without knowing) Our consciousness is developed out of our unconscious processes of attention, perception, emotions and behaviour, neural systems such as mirror neurons that enable peoples brains to harmonize with each other. Chameleon effect: people mimic others non-consciously, automatically copying others behaviours even without realizing it.
