Asylums residential facilities for the mentally ill. Moral treatment treat the patient with kindness and decency. Medical model sees psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions as sets of symptoms, causes, and outcomes, with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms. But medical model missing the whole system of factors that affects the person"s overall functioning overly narrow - focus on cure than on promoting wellness. Biopsychosocial model holistic view of a person as a set of multiple interacting systems. It is hard to determine if a person is abnormal or not due to the variety of cultures; biases may be involved. Maladaptive determined by 3 key criteria: 1) whether it causes distress to oneself or others; 2) impairs day-to-day functioning; 3) increases the risk of injury or harm to oneself or others. The above 3 criteria are useful for starting point, but not necessarily indicate mental illness.
