Document Summary
The physical transition from childhood to adolescence starts with puberty. Puberty starts at age 11 in girls and 13 in boys. The changes that occur in puberty are caused by hormones. Physical growth is stimulated by the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus begins stimulating the release of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, which contribute to the development of primary and secondary sex traits. Primary sex traits are changes in the body that are part of reproduction such as the enlargement of genitals, and the ability to ejaculate. Secondary sex traits are changes in the body that are not part of reproduction, such as the growth of pubic hair, increased breast size in females, muscle mass in males. Menarche is the onset of menstruation, which occurs at age 12. Sper-marche is the boys first ejaculation of sperm, at age 14. Puberty happens much earlier now than 100 years ago.
