Document Summary
Sensation: a physical process when sensory organs respond to external stimuli, ex. feel the wind on your face; hear a car honking. Transduction: conversation of one form of energy to another during sensation, physical energy (ex. light, sound wave) is converted into electrical stimulation (a form of energy) Perception: a psychological process, tries to make sense of the stimuli, ex. identifying a gas leak; hearing a song reminds you of a memory. Absolute threshold: sensory organ requires a minimal amount of stimulation in order to detect a stimulus, ex. can"t smell someone"s perfume unless they"re close to you, measured by method called signal detection. A person listens to increasingly louder tones. Once absolute threshold is reached, she begins to hear. Differential threshold/ just noticeable difference (jnd: weber"s law: bigger stimuli require larger differences to be noticed, ex. hold the lightest object on one hand, and heaviest on the other.
