Hypnosis: inducing heightened state of suggestibility: hypnotist suggests changes and subject is more likely to comply. Suggestions are most effective when they fall into one of these categories: Ideomotor suggestions: related to specific actions that could be performed. Dissociation theory: explains hypnosis as unique state in which consciousness is divided into 2 parts: observer and hidden observer. Applications of hypnosis: cognitive hypnotherapy can treat depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc, treatment of pain (mostly acute pain) Meditation: any procedure involving shift in consciousness to state in which individual is focused, aware, and in control of mental processes. Focused attention (fa): attention is focused on an object or physical sensation: greater levels of activity in frontal lobe which controls attention. Open monitoring (om): paying attention to moment-by-moment sensations without focusing on a particular object: activates structures involved w/ disengaging attention and awareness. Brain damage in grey and white matter of hemispheres.
