Document Summary

Insights from brain damage: lesioning and brain stimulation. Scientists will create brain damage in animals. Lesioning: technique in which researchers intentionally damage area in brain. Creating lesions allows for isolation of single brain structure. Study brain functions using transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms): electromagnetic pulse is delivered to targeted region of brain. If weaker pulse used, method can be used to stimulate brain regions: structural neuroimaging. Structural neuroimaging: type of brain scanning that produces images of diff. structures of brain. Measures size of brain areas to determine whether injury occurred. Computerized tomography (ct scan): x rays sent through brain by tube that rotates around head. Magnetic resonance imaging (mri): clear imgs of brain created based on how diff neural regions absorb and release energy while in a magnetic field. Brain placed inside strong magnetic field (protons of h atoms spin in same direction) Energy from pulse absorbed by atoms and knocks them out of previous position.
