Document Summary
3. 2 how nervous system works: cells & neurotransmitters. Neurons: major type of cells found in nervous system. Responsible for sending and receiving messages throughout the body. Primary purpose is to receive input from 1 group of neurons and to transmit that info to other neurons. Genes in cell body synthesize proteins that form chemicals/structures that allow neuron functionality. Input received by dendrites: branches radiating from cell body that receive msgs from other cells & transmit them to rest of cell. If this gets enough stimulation, it"ll initiate chemical reaction that"ll flow down rest of neuron: reaction is initial step in neuron communication. Activity travels along the axon: transports info in form of electrochemical reactions from cell body to end of neuron. Activity will arrive at axon terminals, which contain vesicles: vesicles have neurotransmitters: chemicals that function as messengers allowing neurons to communicate w/ each other. Impulse stimulates neurotransmitter release, which then leads to neural communication.
